Air Pollution Measurements in London

Map of current air pollution in London

Monitoring network

The London Air Quality Network (LAQN) was formed in 1993 to coordinate and improve air pollution monitoring in London. Thirty-one London Boroughs currently supply measurements to the LAQN, comprising approximately 200 instruments at 85 sites. Increasingly, these data are being supplemented by measurements from local authorities surrounding London, thereby providing the overall perspective of air pollution in South East England to understand air pollution in the south east.

Measurements are predominantly undertaken using continuous analysers, these produce high-resolution measurements in real-time. These are downloaded and disseminated on an hourly basis so that information can be relayed to the public while it is still relevant.
