What are we doing about air pollution?
Air quality in the UK is now generally good. But there are still sometimes unacceptably high levels of pollution that can harm human health and the environment.Consequently, the UK Government set objectives for the eight main air pollutants to protect health.
Local authorities address air pollution challenges through the Local Air Quality Management process. There are three main stages to this process.
- Review and assessment
Each local authority is required to review and assess air quality in its area. They use modelling and monitoring techniques to find out whether the statutory air quality objectives for seven of the eight key pollutants are likely to be met on time (ozone is not included). - Designation of Air Quality Management Areas
